BalticSeaH2
BalticSeaH2 is a 5-year project funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe programme through the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. It runs from June 2023 to May 2028 and brings together 40+ partners from 10 countries, including Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and France. The main focus is building a hydrogen network between southern Finland and Estonia.
The goal of the project is to create a shared hydrogen market in the Baltic Sea region. Today, hydrogen systems are often small and disconnected. BalticSeaH2 wants to connect production, storage, transport and use of hydrogen across borders using pipelines, electricity grids and shipping routes. This will make clean hydrogen easier to use in industry, transport and energy.
Baltic Innovation Agency (BIA) supports the project by leading replication and exploitation activities geared towards the uptake of the project results.
Main goals of the project are to:
- Create the first international hydrogen valley in Europe
- Support cleaner energy and reduce emissions
- Build a strong hydrogen economy in the region
Key activities include:
- Testing 25 pilot projects that cover all parts of the hydrogen value chain
- Producing up to 100 000 tonnes of clean hydrogen per year by the end of the project
- Using hydrogen in real-life examples like ships, trucks, factories and power systems
- Promoting investment and creating new business opportunities
BalticSeaH2 helps reduce carbon emissions and makes the region more energy independent. It creates jobs and supports innovation in clean technologies. The project also provides a clear example for how other regions in Europe can build their own hydrogen systems. By connecting countries and industries, it helps move Europe closer to a greener and more secure energy future.
